A proposed collaboration between the restaurants and cafes that share this back patio space in Highland Park. I was asked to design a more permanent pergola structure that would replace the somewhat dingy and weathered, fabric, shade-sails that currently provide the patio with its shade. The proposed structures and ideas were as follows:
Utilize the natural height of the space. An accentuated sense of height would serve as a metaphor for higher thought, elevated imagination and nobility of character.
Working within budget constraints I wanted to show a few combinations of material. Wood with fabric, wood with steel and wood with plastic. Situating these different materials to throw geometric shadows onto the floor from above.
A sense of communal gathering and idea exchange between Highland Park’s young creative class was kept at the forefront of the design process.
